National Bank of Greece (Cyprus) Names Michalis Athanasiou as New Chief Business Officer

The National Bank of Greece (Cyprus) has appointed Michalis Athanasiou as its new General Manager and Chief Business Officer. The bank’s CEO, George Agioutantis, highlighted how Athanasiou’s long career in banking aligns with the institution’s strategic plans for Cyprus. Michalis Athanasiou brings decades of experience from senior roles in Cyprus, Australia, and Luxembourg. At Bank of Cyprus, he served as Group Chief Risk Officer, helping secure €1 billion in fresh capital during 2014. Later, as Executive Director for Global Corporate Banking & Markets, he oversaw the bank's corporate portfolio for large and international clients. Athanasiou’s appointment comes as the National Bank of Greece (Cyprus) seeks to strengthen its operations. His track record in risk management, corporate banking, and capital enhancement is expected to play a key role in the bank's future direction. The institution has emphasised his experience as a driving factor in the decision.
