"My Most Beautiful Gift" - 32,000 Lights at Christmas House - "My Most Beautiful Gift" - 32,000 Lights at Christmas House
Every winter, a quiet street in Erlensee transforms into a glowing wonderland known as the Christmas House. The tradition began 13 years ago, inspired by Renate Schneider’s dream of a light-filled home and brought to life by her son, Daniel. What started as a family project has since drawn visitors from across the Rhine-Main region and beyond.
The idea for the Christmas House first took shape when Michael Scholz proposed the concept 13 years ago. Daniel Schneider then turned his mother’s wish into reality, covering their home in warm white and yellow lights—avoiding flashy colours or blinking effects. The display now features 32,000 energy-efficient LEDs, costing around €160 in electricity each season.
The family begins setting up the lights each year on the first Sunday of Advent. Though the initial investment reached roughly €16,000, they refuse donations to cover costs, insisting visitors simply enjoy the spectacle. Unlike many holiday attractions, the Schneiders keep theirs low-key, with no mulled wine stalls or food vendors.
By January 6, the lights shine for the final time. Thanks to years of practice, the family now dismantles the display in record time.
The Christmas House has grown into a minor tourist attraction, pulling in guests from as far as Fulda. Yet the Schneiders remain focused on preserving its intimate charm. The tradition continues each winter, offering a quiet but dazzling celebration of the season.
