Münsterland's WLE rail line reopens, boosting regional connectivity and sustainability

A long-awaited rail connection has returned to Münsterland after the WLE line between Münster and Sendenhorst was officially reactivated. The 21-kilometre route now links the city with its rural surroundings, offering a new transport option for tens of thousands of residents. Local and regional leaders have hailed the project as a key step toward better mobility and sustainability.

The newly reopened WLE line runs from Münster into the district of Warendorf, restoring a direct rail link that had been inactive for years. This reactivation plays a crucial role in shaping the future Münsterland S-Bahn network, bringing the region closer together. For residents in Warendorf, the service provides a much-needed alternative to car travel, improving access to jobs, education, and services in Münster.

State officials have emphasised the project's importance in the broader shift toward sustainable transport. North Rhine-Westphalia's Transport Minister Oliver Krischer described the relaunch as a pivotal moment for the region's transport transition. Regional President Andreas Bothe echoed this sentiment, urging more people to use public transport by taking advantage of the new connection between urban and rural areas.

Local leaders have also welcomed the development. Lord Mayor Fuchs and District Administrator Dr. Gericke both praised the WLE line as a vital next step in reviving the railway network. The project aligns with the state government's priority of expanding eco-friendly travel options, offering a practical solution for daily commuters and occasional travellers alike.

The reactivated WLE line now operates as a key part of Münsterland's transport system. It connects Münster with Sendenhorst and beyond, providing faster, greener travel for the region. With strong support from both state and local authorities, the route is set to play a long-term role in reducing car dependency and improving regional connectivity.
