Motorcyclist crashes after ignoring lane closure on Germany's A5 motorway

An 18-year-old motorcyclist caused an accident on the A5 near Friedberg after ignoring lane closure signs. The crash led to minor injuries and an eight-kilometre traffic jam. Police have since recorded 72 similar violations, with 28 drivers now under investigation.

The incident took place on March 17, 2026, when the rider failed to obey a red 'X' signal on the motorway. Electronic overhead signs had displayed the closure with a yellow diagonal arrow, but the motorcyclist entered the blocked lane anyway. The collision resulted in minor injuries for both the driver and his passenger, along with €9,000 in damages.

Police warn that using a closed lane is a traffic offence. If it obstructs emergency services, drivers can face a one-month ban. Ignoring these signals delays response times for treating injuries and clearing accident scenes.

Authorities advise merging early to reduce risks and maintain smooth traffic flow. No further motorcycle accidents linked to red 'X' violations have been reported on the A5 in Central Hesse this year.
