More ATMs for Bremen

Bremen has taken steps to improve access to cash and banking services across its districts. The Senate Chancellery and Sparkasse Bremen have agreed on three key measures after residents, particularly older individuals, raised concerns about disappearing ATMs. Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte acknowledged the difficulties and welcomed the bank’s response to the issue.

The first measure focuses on finding new permanent locations for ATMs. The aim is to expand the network in areas where access has become limited. This follows complaints about long travel distances to the nearest machines.

The second step introduces two mobile ATMs for short-term use in different parts of the city. These will be deployed flexibly to fill gaps where fixed machines are unavailable. A third initiative involves a pilot project led by the Senate Chancellery. It will provide financial advice in public spaces at set times, helping with tasks like opening accounts, unblocking cards, or setting up online banking. The project responds to fears over cash access, which worsened after sudden ATM removals. The decline in ATM availability stems partly from a rise in ATM explosions and property owners refusing to host machines. These challenges pushed authorities and the bank to seek alternative solutions.

The new measures aim to restore reliable access to cash and banking support in Bremen’s neighbourhoods. Mobile ATMs and advisory services will operate alongside efforts to secure permanent locations. The changes follow direct feedback from residents concerned about losing essential financial services.
