Merck’s CEO praises Germany’s economic revival under Merz’s bold agenda
Belén Garijo, the outgoing CEO of Merck, has expressed her optimism about Germany's economic future under Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government. Despite the prevailing pessimism among many Germans, Garijo appreciates the confidence the government has instilled in the economy.
Garijo, who has led Merck since 2021 and moved to Germany 15 years ago, believes that the government's swift action on plans is crucial. She particularly praises the High-Tech Agenda, which focuses on six key technologies and sets ambitious goals for artificial intelligence, research and development, battery production, and chip manufacturing. Garijo's positive outlook is also reflected in Merck's expansion of risk management to navigate global uncertainties.
However, Garijo dismisses the idea of decoupling Europe's industry from China. She considers China essential for global trade and the future of European and U.S. operations. She thinks Europe needs a strong Germany, especially in its current state, to maintain its global competitiveness.
Garijo, who plans to step down as CEO in April 2026, has shown confidence in Germany's economic prospects under Merz's government. Her views, shaped by her experiences leading Merck and living in Germany for 15 years, highlight the importance of strategic planning and international cooperation in driving economic growth.
