Men cause most traffic accidents in Hesse - Men cause 68% of Hesse’s deadly road accidents in 2024, data reveals
In a recent report, the Hesse transport authority revealed that males continue to dominate road accident statistics. The findings, released ahead of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, show that males were responsible for 68 percent of accidents in 2024 where people were injured or killed. This trend aligns with the long-term pattern since 1950, where male road users have caused the majority of accidents each year.
In 2024, Hesse saw 19,250 accidents resulting in injury or death, with 25,000 people injured and 198 fatalities. The most common causes of these accidents were insufficient following distance, failure to yield, and excessive speed. Interestingly, despite women making up 45 percent of newer driver's license holders in Germany, males were more frequently at fault for tailgating, while women were more often involved in right-of-way violations.
Experts attribute this disparity to males driving more often and taking greater risks on the road. However, road safety authorities remind all drivers to maintain a safe following distance, yield when necessary, and adhere to speed limits to prevent accidents.
The Hesse transport authority's report underscores the persistent gender imbalance in road accident statistics. As the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims approaches, it serves as a reminder for all road users to prioritise safety and responsibility. Authorities encourage everyone to reflect on their driving habits and work together to reduce accidents and fatalities on Hesse's roads.
