Meghalaya: Ri Bhoi Police step up pre-festival highway checks
Ri Bhoi Police have stepped up road safety measures ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations. A major vehicle inspection drive took place along National Highway-6 near Quinnine village. Officers targeted violations that threaten public safety and misuse of official privileges.
The operation was led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rahat Khan. Teams thoroughly checked every vehicle, focusing on those with tinted black windows. No exceptions were made during the inspections.
Two bank cash-carrying vehicles were found with unauthorised sirens. Khan personally ordered their removal. Officials also discovered private cars displaying 'Government of Meghalaya' markings on their number plates. These false labels were immediately stripped away, and drivers received strict warnings against impersonating government vehicles. The crackdown extended to other visible violations that could compromise road safety. Police emphasised that the drive was part of broader efforts to prevent abuse of power and maintain order during the festive rush.
The enforcement action highlights Ri Bhoi Police’s commitment to road discipline. Unauthorised sirens and misleading government markings were confiscated. Authorities have warned that further misuse of official symbols will face strong penalties.
