Markel Strengthens Leadership with Marine Insurance Veteran Michelle Sipple
Markel has appointed Michelle Sipple as Managing Director of Inland Marine within its Property and Marine leadership team. The move brings in a specialist with more than 30 years of experience in marine and construction underwriting. Her arrival comes as the global inland marine insurance market continues steady growth.
Sipple began her career at Chubb in 1998, where she spent 15 years, eventually rising to Assistant Vice President. She later took on senior roles at Firemans Fund Insurance Company as Regional Underwriting Director for Inland, Ocean Marine and Property.
Her expertise expanded further at Crum & Forster, where she served as Senior Vice President for Inland Marine. She then joined Lexington Insurance Company, spending six years as SVP of Portfolio Execution and Global Head of Inland Marine. Before Markel, she worked as Regional Vice President of Ocean and Inland Marine at ACE Westchester and, most recently, as Head of Inland Marine and Construction at Everest Insurance.
The inland marine insurance sector has seen progressive growth of 5–7% annually over the past five years. Key drivers include digital tools like telematics and AI for risk assessment, increased demand for renewable energy coverage, and supply chain disruptions following COVID-19. Regulatory shifts, such as stricter ESG reporting in the EU and US flood risk updates, have also shaped the market. Markel itself has strengthened its position through major acquisitions, including Steadfast Group's US operations for $1.1 billion in 2023 and RSA's Inland Marine division for $850 million in 2025.
At Markel, Sipple will now take charge of shaping the company's inland marine strategy.
Sipple's appointment adds deep industry knowledge to Markel's leadership at a time of expansion in the sector. Her role will focus on guiding the firm's approach to inland marine risks as the market evolves with new technologies and regulatory demands.
