Marburg's New Central Train Stop Could Transform Urban Mobility by 2034
A new train stop called Marburg-Central has been proposed between Marburg Central Station and Marburg South Station. The project aims to improve access to the city's historic centre and surrounding districts. Officials have described the plan as a key step in boosting sustainable transport and urban quality of life.
The preferred site for the stop is near the Kurt-Schumacher-BrĂźcke, chosen for its structural suitability and easy walking distance to the city centre. A feasibility study confirmed the location's logistical soundness, technical feasibility, and eligibility for funding. The station could also be added to the RB 41 line's timetable without causing disruptions.
A cost-benefit analysis produced a ratio of 2.33, indicating strong economic viability. RMV CEO Prof. Knut Ringat welcomed the findings, stating they align with the company's goal of providing direct train access to Marburg's city centre. Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Spies called the study a milestone in shaping the city's mobility strategy.
Implementation would likely coincide with the planned major renovation of the Main-Weser Railway, with 2034 set as a potential completion date. Early political support is considered crucial due to the lengthy planning and approval processes involved.
The new stop would shorten travel distances and simplify transfers for residents and visitors. It would also connect key areas, including the historic upper town and nearby districts, more efficiently. Officials now await further steps to move the project forward.
