Marburg’s €200K Plan to Revive Its City Centre by 2028

Marburg has secured €200,000 in state funding to revitalise its city centre. The money comes from the Future City Centers programme and will support a new retail strategy. Officials aim to improve shopping, public spaces, and local business visibility by 2028.

The city’s updated Location and Retail Concept was adopted in November 2025 as an official urban development plan. Developed by CIMA Beratung und Management GmbH, the strategy cost €60,000 and involved input from retailers, politicians, and city administrators.

The plan divides Marburg’s urban area into eight zones, each with tailored improvements. Proposed changes include more greenery, better lighting, digital information terminals, and a system to manage empty shop units. A key focus is enhancing the area around the main station, covering Bahnhofstraße and Elisabethstraße.

To support local businesses, the city marketing team will offer social media training for independent retailers. A new Retail Advisory Council will also meet regularly, bringing together city officials, politicians, and representatives from all retail sectors. The concept includes further ideas still under review.

The funding and strategy aim to modernise Marburg’s retail sector in response to shifting shopping trends. Work on the station area and other zones is expected to complete by the end of 2028. The council and marketing support will help businesses adapt to the changes ahead.
