Man’s champagne theft turns violent as he injures three officers in Frankfurt

A 43-year-old man was detained in Frankfurt after attempting to steal two bottles of champagne from a supermarket. The incident escalated when he resisted arrest, injuring three officers in the process. Police later released him pending further investigation.

The confrontation began on January 8, 2026, at a grocery store on Eschersheimer Landstraße. The suspect tried to leave without paying for the champagne. When staff intervened, he became aggressive and refused to cooperate.

Officers arrived quickly but faced resistance as the man kicked and verbally abused them. He also tried to escape while being handcuffed, forcing police to call for backup. A police dog was deployed to help subdue him.

Three officers sustained injuries during the struggle. Despite the chaos, the man was eventually restrained and taken into custody. He was later released while authorities continue their investigation.

The suspect remains unnamed in official reports. Police are reviewing the case, including the theft attempt and the assault on officers. No further details about potential charges have been released yet.
