Major Crackdown on Labour Law Violations in Baden-Württemberg's Hotel and Restaurant Industry

A major crackdown on labour law violations in the hotel and restaurant industry across Baden-Württemberg has uncovered numerous illegal employments and other offences. Inspectors found 63 suspected cases among 107 checked individuals, involving both illegal employment of foreigners and social security contribution evasion.

On September 19, 55 officers conducted inspections in Lörrach, Freiburg, and Offenburg. In Lörrach, a wanted man and three persons without valid work permits were encountered. The inspections also revealed several businesses violating their obligation to immediately notify authorities or record working hours.

In Freiburg, minimum wage payments must be checked in eight cases, and a significant amount of shisha tobacco - 26 kilograms - was seized. Meanwhile, in Offenburg, numerous illegal employments were discovered, including a minor without a residence permit and a Turkish employee wanted for arrest. Two Vietnamese nationals, one with forged documents, were found in Ludwigsburg during a separate inspection on September 24, 2025.

The affected employers in these cases must now answer for aiding and abetting illegal residence and illegal employment. The findings highlight the need for stricter enforcement and compliance with labour laws in the industry. Further investigations are ongoing.
