Mainz’s €100M Gutenberg Museum Redefines the Future of Printing History

Work has officially started on Mainz’s new Gutenberg Museum, a project set to transform the site into a ‘World Museum of Printing’. The city has allocated a €100 million budget for construction and exhibition design. Yet, despite years of planning, key questions about the museum’s future management remain unanswered.

The upgraded museum will introduce cutting-edge features, including interactive displays, spacious exhibition halls, and a secure treasure chamber for its prized Gutenberg Bibles. Visitors can expect audio guides in 15 languages and bilingual wall labels in German and English. The aim is to meet international standards while broadening public engagement.

The new Gutenberg Museum is on track to become a global hub for printing history, backed by a €100 million investment. While construction moves forward, the city must still resolve long-standing governance issues before the 2025 launch. Until then, the museum’s future leadership—and how it will operate—stays undefined.
