Lufthansa & Star Alliance to Merge Frankfurt Terminals 1 & 2 into Single Hub
Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners are set to merge Terminals 1 and 2 at Frankfurt Airport into a single, optimized hub. The project aims to enhance traffic flow and bring the facilities up to date.
The core of the project involves integrating Terminals 1 and 2, with Lufthansa leading the effort alongside other Star Alliance partners. The process will begin at Terminal 1, though the exact start date remains unclear.
Terminal 2, which has been operational for over three decades, will undergo a comprehensive renovation before being gradually taken offline. This phase is expected to last longer than a few years and will cost around one billion euros. The modernization aims to update Terminal 2's technology and enable seamless integration with Terminal 1. The long-term development of Frankfurt Airport is tied to Lufthansa's fleet strategy, including Boeing 787 deliveries and potential Airbus A350-900 relocations from Munich.
Despite these plans, Frankfurt Airport currently faces challenges due to the pandemic's impact on passenger numbers. Only around 61 million passengers are expected by the end of 2024.
Lufthansa and its partners are investing in Frankfurt Airport's future with a one billion euro modernization project. The integration of Terminals 1 and 2, along with Terminal 2's renovation, will optimize hub traffic and bring the facilities up to date. Despite current challenges, the project looks towards a post-pandemic future, aligning with Lufthansa's fleet strategy.
