Leipzig's S-Bahn network expands with new routes and services by 2026
The Leipzig Regional Transport Authority (ZVNL) has approved extra S-Bahn services as part of the MDSB2025plus network expansion. Funding for these additions comes from unused budgets after construction delays by DB InfraGO AG. The changes will take effect from December 2026. The S2 line will see its route extended beyond Leipzig-Connewitz, now reaching Markkleeberg-Gaschwitz. This extension aims to improve connections for passengers travelling further south.
The S3 line will gain two additional round trips between Halle, Schkeuditz, CTL, and Borna. While details on capacity changes remain unclear, the regional authority confirmed these extra services without comparing them to other line expansions.
For the S4 route, six extra weekday round trips and three on weekends will operate between Torgau and Falkenberg. Two of these extended services will also run from Taucha to Torgau, while one additional train pair will serve the TorgauâCTLâWurzen route.
The S1 line will add four round trips between Leipzig Miltitzer Allee, CTL, and Leipzig-StĂśtteritz. Meanwhile, the S5 service will include one extra train between Leipzig-Connewitz, CTL, and Halle.
Beyond train expansions, the ZVNL Assembly also backed an action plan for infrastructure upgrades. These include better accessibility at stations and improved bike-and-ride facilities. The approved changes will increase S-Bahn connections across Leipzig and surrounding areas from late 2026. Funding from unused construction budgets has allowed these expansions without additional costs. The plan also covers station upgrades to support growing passenger numbers.
