Solar Thermal Power Plant to Go Online in Leipzig Next Year - Leipzig's Giant Solar Plant to Slash Carbon Footprint by 2%

Leipzig is set to significantly reduce its carbon footprint with the construction of Germany's largest solar thermal plant nearing completion. The €40 million project, once operational, will cover 2% of the city's annual district heating demand.

The plant, a key step in decarbonizing Leipzig's heat supply currently reliant on natural gas and coal, will undergo a trial run in early 2025. Full operation is expected to begin in May 2026. Notably, this is the first such project of its kind in Leipzig and Germany, as there are no other large-scale thermal solar power plants in the final stages of construction. Crews will commence laying connecting pipes to the city's district heating network as early as November.

The completion of this plant marks a significant milestone in Leipzig's transition to renewable energy sources. It is expected to contribute to a more sustainable and cleaner heat supply for the city.
