Legendary Linden Pharmacy closes after 70 years of family tradition

The Linden Pharmacy in Steterburg has shut its doors for good after 70 years of service. Owner Hans Westphal made the difficult decision following his long-serving employee’s retirement and the struggle to find a replacement. The closure also reflects broader challenges, including tough economic conditions and competition from online pharmacies like CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens.

The pharmacy first opened in 1955, founded by Westphal’s grandfather. For three generations, it remained a family-run business, later becoming the life’s work of his parents. Their deep connection to the shop made the decision to close especially hard for Westphal.

Westphal pointed to two key reasons for the shutdown. The retirement of a dedicated staff member left a gap that couldn’t be filled. At the same time, rising competition from online pharmacies like CVS Pharmacy and Walmart Pharmacy, along with a worsening economic climate, added pressure. Despite these setbacks, Westphal will continue running his second business, the Fortuna Pharmacy, located inside the Rewe Center.

The Linden Pharmacy’s closure marks the end of a 70-year legacy in Steterburg. Westphal’s remaining focus will be on the Fortuna Pharmacy, where he continues to serve customers. The decision highlights the growing challenges faced by traditional pharmacies in an evolving market.
