Legendary German bakery chain files for self-administration amid financial crisis
Mecklenburger Backstuben GmbH, a prominent bakery chain in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, has sought self-administration due to financial difficulties. The family-run business, headquartered in Waren on the Müritz Lake, is now collaborating with insolvency administrators to stabilize operations. Despite the crisis, all 55 branches remain open for now.
The company has faced intensifying pressure from discount competitors, making it challenging to increase prices for customers. Rising costs for staff, energy, and ingredients have exacerbated the financial strain. To avert immediate collapse, Mecklenburger Backstuben GmbH filed for self-administration at the Neubrandenburg District Court.
The bakery chain continues operating while restructuring efforts are underway. Wages are secured for the next three months, and the company is exploring finance options to recover. The outcome will dictate whether further job losses can be mitigated.
