Latvia’s quirky book fair stand aims to win global literary attention
Latvia is making a strong push to showcase its literature at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair. The country’s national stand, designed as a quirky apartment for fictional introverted writers, will host events and meetings. Officials also plan to apply for guest country status at the fair between 2028 and 2030.
The Latvian national stand is situated in Hall 4.1, at Stand D2. Its design draws inspiration from characters created during Latvia’s book export campaign, featuring a setting that resembles the home of reclusive book lovers.
A reception will take place at the stand on October 17 at 17:00. Foreign publishers of Latvian literature and key cooperation partners have been invited to attend. During the fair, Culture Minister Agnese Lāce will meet with Juergen Boos, the director of the Frankfurt Book Fair. She will also participate in events highlighting Latvian writers. The discussions will likely cover Latvia’s bid for guest country status at the fair in the coming years. Latvia’s strategy includes a focus on increasing translations of its literature. This effort aims to raise the international profile of Latvian authors and publishers.
The Frankfurt Book Fair provides Latvia with a major platform to promote its literary scene. The reception, meetings, and stand design all support the country’s goal of securing guest status in the near future. Success in this bid could significantly boost the global reach of Latvian books.
