Las Vegas: Gaming Up, Tourism Down in June 2025

Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the world, has seen a mixed bag of fortunes in recent months. While gaming revenue rose modestly by 3.5% in June 2025, tourism remained weak, with visitor volume down by 11.3% compared to the same period last year.

The Sphere at the Venetian Resort has been hailed as a 'game changer' by the resort's CEO, but the overall tourism scene has been sluggish. Service workers on the strip have reported declining foot traffic, which has impacted their earnings. The labor force in Nevada shrank by about 1,300 people in August 2025, while total employment held steady at roughly 1.57 million jobs. Nevada's unemployment rate edged down slightly from 5.4% to 5.3% during the same period.

Private sector employment in Nevada fell by 6,000 jobs in August 2025, with construction and accommodation and food services industries being the hardest hit. Hotel occupancy rates in Las Vegas declined by 6.5% percentage points to 78.7% in June 2025, and convention attendance dropped by 10.7% in the same month. Revenue per available room in Las Vegas plunged nearly 14% in June 2025, indicating lower profitability for resorts and hotels.

Despite the challenges, Las Vegas continues to innovate and attract visitors with new attractions like The Sphere. However, the city must address the weak tourism and employment trends to ensure sustained growth and prosperity.
