Kazakhstan's tenge and diplomacy: Two historic milestones on November 12

November 12 holds special significance in Kazakhstan's history. On this date in 1993, the country introduced its national currency, the tenge, marking a key step toward economic independence. The same day also saw later milestones, including the establishment of the nation's diplomatic service in 1997.

In 1993, Kazakhstan's first president signed a decree to replace the Russian ruble with the tenge. The transition began on November 12, with citizens allowed to exchange old rubles at a rate of 500 to one tenge. A cap of 100,000 rubles (200 tenge) per person was set to manage the process. By November 15, the tenge became the only legal currency in circulation.

The tenge debuted with an initial exchange rate of 4.75 to the US dollar. Over time, its value has shifted significantly against the dollar, reflecting broader economic changes. Four years later, on November 12, 1997, the Law on Diplomatic Service was enacted. This legislation created the legal foundation for Kazakhstan's diplomatic operations, shaping its international relations. Beyond national events, November 12 is also recognised globally as World Pneumonia Day. The annual observance aims to raise awareness and reduce the spread of the disease worldwide.

The tenge's introduction in 1993 symbolised Kazakhstan's move toward financial sovereignty. Later, the 1997 diplomatic law further defined its role on the world stage. Both events remain pivotal in the country's modern history, while World Pneumonia Day adds a global health perspective to the date.
