Kazakhstan fixes nearly 1M vehicle tax records amid citizen complaints

Kazakhstan's Finance Ministry has updated nearly one million vehicle records in an effort to correct tax discrepancies. The move comes after thousands of citizens reported issues with their vehicle tax calculations through the e-salyq Azamat app. Officials are now considering a tax amnesty for owners of unused or problematic cars. Over 10,000 Kazakh residents have used the e-salyq Azamat app to request changes to their vehicle tax bills. Many complaints stem from outdated registrations, where owners sold cars via power of attorney but never deregistered them. Others left the country without removing their vehicles from official records.

Deputy Zhuldyz Suleimenova highlighted ongoing problems with tax assessments, prompting further review. Finance Minister Yerulan Zhamauayev responded by proposing a tax amnesty for old or unused vehicles. The ministry is also collaborating with the Ministry of Internal Affairs to tackle cases involving stolen cars.

No official figures on stolen vehicle numbers or affected regions have been released. However, the ministry's bulk update of records aims to reduce errors and streamline tax processing. The proposed tax amnesty could provide relief for owners of long-unused vehicles. Meanwhile, the government continues working to resolve registration gaps and improve tax accuracy. Updates to vehicle records have already been applied to nearly one million cases without requiring direct taxpayer action.
