Journalists face violent hostility from left-radical activists in Giessen
Tensions flared in Giessen as journalists faced hostility from left-radical activists during recent events. While some reporters were physically attacked, others encountered aggressive demands for identification. The incidents highlighted concerns over press freedom in the area.
A group of Antifa activists targeted journalists from Junge Freiheit, pelting them with rocks. Others, including reporter Vadim Derksen, were stopped and forced to show identification but avoided physical harm. The aggression variedâsome faced violence, while others were merely obstructed.
At the scene, a self-described 'Grandma Against the Far Right' confronted reporters in an overbearing manner. Meanwhile, a far-left extremist insisted on checking journalistsâ press credentials before allowing them to work. Derksen, who was present, later gave an interview to JF-TV about the experience.
The clashes in Giessen left some journalists injured and others hindered in their work. The demands for ID checks and the physical attacks raised questions about the safety of reporters covering politically charged events. Authorities have yet to comment on measures to protect press freedom in similar situations.
