India's NIA Receives Crucial 26/11 Mumbai Attacks Intel, Files Supplementary Chargesheet Against Mastermind Tahawwur Rana

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) of India has recently received crucial information about 26/11 Mumbai attacks mastermind Tahawwur Rana from US authorities. This intelligence was shared through the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) process, routed via the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Indian Embassy in Washington. The NIA has since sought further details from the US government to strengthen its case against Rana.

In a significant development, the US extradited Rana to India on April 9, 2025. This was made possible through the NIA's close collaboration with the FBI, the US Department of Justice (USDoJ), and other US intelligence agencies. Following his extradition, the NIA submitted a compliance report under Section 207 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) regarding the supply of documents related to the earlier chargesheet filed in 2011.

The NIA has also filed the first supplementary chargesheet against Rana in July 2025. This chargesheet includes additional evidence and documents that have come to light since his extradition.

Rana's extradition and the subsequent supplementary chargesheet are significant steps towards justice for the victims of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. The NIA's continued cooperation with US authorities is expected to further bolster the case against Rana.
