Hünfeld’s ecumenical Advent service unites police and schoolchildren in song

An ecumenical Advent service took place at St. James’s Church in Hünfeld this week. Organised by the Hünfeld Federal Police Division and the Kassel Federal Police Inspectorate, the main event brought together officers, schoolchildren, and local musicians for a festive evening of reflection and song. The service began with the 'Advent Jodel' from Lorenz Maierhofer’s Alpine Mass, accompanied by a hurdy-gurdy. Senior Police Commissioner Michael Munzert opened the event, welcoming attendees on behalf of the division’s leadership.

School choirs from Frankenheim State Primary School and Kaltennordheim’s 'Andreas Fack' State Primary School performed under the direction of Ulla Goerge. The older children of the Kaltennordheim school band also participated, joined by singer Thomas Biskupski and regional cantor Christoph Löbens on organ. Father Andreas Bröcklig delivered the sermon, encouraging the congregation to embrace stillness and step away from daily stresses during Advent. Professor Dr. Freimut Schirrmacher also took part in the service. To close, the children sang Thomas Riegler’s Blessing Song, accompanied by Christoph Löbens on piano and Ulla Goerge on clarinet. Many officers, both former and current, found the performances deeply moving, creating a contemplative atmosphere as the service ended. A police bus safely transported the children to and from Hünfeld for the event.

The Advent service brought together music, reflection, and community in Hünfeld. Officers and schoolchildren alike contributed to an evening that blended tradition with a moment of shared calm before the holiday season.
