Hünfeld's Bold Plan to Revive Its City Centre with Citizen-Led Ideas

Hünfeld has taken a step toward revitalising its city centre by applying for state funding. The town aims to establish a City Center Lab under Hesse's Future Inner City programme. A recent workshop gathered residents to brainstorm ideas for the €150,000 grant.

The brainstorming session invited locals to propose creative ways to use the available funds. Suggestions ranged from a new cinema to an after-work market and even bouncy castle days. Project leader Madalena dos Reis Gonçalves urged participants to think ambitiously and challenge conventional ideas.

Mayor Benjamin Tschesnok highlighted the importance of involving citizens in shaping the project. He stressed that the lab should reflect their visions for a lively city centre. Moritz Meidert, managing director of the consulting firm Kommune Zukunft, moderated the event and reinforced the goal of creating a vibrant urban space.

A follow-up workshop is scheduled for mid-June. There, participants will present concrete recommendations to the city council for further action.

The City Center Lab initiative now moves forward with citizen-backed proposals. The €150,000 grant will fund selected projects aimed at transforming Hünfeld's core. The next workshop will determine which ideas advance to implementation.
