Hünfeld transforms vacant space into a dynamic urban lab by 2028
Hünfeld has secured €150,000 in state funding to create a flexible inner-city lab. The project, part of Hesse’s Future Inner City initiative, will transform a vacant town centre property into a space for pop-up stores, workshops, and cultural events. Work is set to finish by the end of 2028.
The lab will occupy an empty building in Hünfeld’s town centre. Inside, modular furniture will allow quick reconfiguration for different uses, including outdoor setups. Activities will range from DIY workshops and handmade markets to small-scale cultural gatherings and gaming spaces.
Schools will also benefit from creative workspaces, while local entrepreneurs can test business ideas in pop-up stores. The project aligns with Hesse’s wider effort to revitalise urban centres by diversifying their functions. Hünfeld is one of 62 municipalities sharing €11.46 million in grants under the initiative. The city administration will oversee the lab’s development, ensuring it meets community needs by 2028.
The inner-city lab will provide adaptable spaces for trade, culture, and education. Once complete, it will offer residents and businesses new ways to engage with the town centre. The project marks Hünfeld’s first step in reshaping its urban core under the state-funded scheme.
