Hit-and-run van flees after smashing church fence in Herborn-Seelbach
A hit-and-run incident in Herborn-Seelbach has left police searching for witnesses. A white box van reportedly struck a church fence while reversing before fleeing the scene. The driver, described as stocky and dressed in blue, remains unidentified.
In a separate accident on Hermannsteiner Straße in Aßlar, a 15-year-old passenger suffered severe injuries. The crash involved a Chevrolet Matiz, whose 18-year-old driver escaped with minor injuries.
The Herborn-Seelbach incident began when the driver of a white Ford Transit, bearing a 'GM' license plate, allegedly reversed into a church fence. The van, carrying two people, then left the scene without stopping. Damage to the fence was estimated at around €300, while the total cost of vehicle repairs reached nearly €13,000.
Earlier, in Aßlar, an 18-year-old lost control of a Chevrolet Matiz while taking a left-hand curve. The car collided with parked vehicles, injuring the driver and a 15-year-old passenger. The younger victim sustained serious harm, while the driver suffered only minor injuries. Both the van driver and his passenger in the Herborn-Seelbach case are believed to be from the Lahn-Dill district. Authorities have yet to release further details about the passenger. Traffic accidents in the Lahn-Dill district have declined over the past five years. According to data from the Hessian State Statistical Office, incidents per 1,000 residents fell from 45 to 39 between 2021 and 2025. This 12% reduction outperforms the state average of 8% and compares favourably to neighbouring regions like Gießen, where accidents rose by 2%
Police continue to investigate the hit-and-run in Herborn-Seelbach, urging anyone with information to come forward. The injured 15-year-old in Aßlar remains under medical care, while the Chevrolet driver recovers from minor wounds. The incidents highlight ongoing road safety challenges, despite the district's improving accident statistics.
