The Hessian Water Protection Police, celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2025, plays a crucial role in ensuring safety and environmental protection on the region's waterways. With over 130 highly qualified officers, they maintain security on more than 525 kilometers of navigable rivers and lakes.
The Water Protection Police monitors a wide range of activities on the water. They rescue people in distress and enforce safety regulations for leisure boating, including alcohol controls. Annually, they subject over 2,100 commercial cargo and passenger ships to comprehensive controls, focusing on adherence to schedules, crew qualifications, safety aspects, and environmental regulations.
In addition to routine duties, the Water Protection Police takes on special assignments. Furthermore, they supported a major maritime festival in Bremerhaven in August 2025, showcasing their versatility and commitment to waterway safety and enjoyment.
The Hessian Water Protection Police, with its extensive responsibilities and dedicated officers, ensures the safety and enjoyment of all who use the waterways for sports, leisure, tourism, and cargo transport.
