Hessian universities have recorded a rise in first-year enrollments for the 2025/26 winter semester, with numbers climbing to 35,706, marking a 2.9 percent increase from the previous year. This growth follows a period of fluctuating student figures across the region.

The latest figures show a clear upward trend in new students. The 35,706 first-year enrollments for 2025/26 surpass the previous peak of 37,466 set in the 2018/19 winter semester. While still below that earlier record, the recent rise suggests renewed interest in higher education in Hesse.

The 2025/26 winter semester saw a notable increase in first-year students at Hessian universities. Though total enrollment has dipped slightly, the rise in new arrivals points to shifting trends in higher education. TU Darmstadt remains a key player in attracting fresh talent to the region.
