Hessian Minister Pushes for EU Funding Boost, AI Regulation to Protect Creatives

Hessian Minister of Science and Arts Timon Gremmels recently held talks in Brussels, advocating for increased EU funding and regulative intervention to protect cultural and creative professionals from large AI platforms.

Minister Gremmels emphasized the importance of European research funding, pushing for a significant increase in funds for research in upcoming EU programs. He highlighted the need for strong funding for democracy research in the Horizon Europe program.

During his talks, Gremmels welcomed the new AgoraEU program for cultural and democracy promotion. He also called for simplification of EU funding procedures, proposing measures to reduce bureaucracy and streamline regulations for research and culture funding.

Gremmels proposed licensing models to benefit rights holders for the use of their works by AI platforms. He advocated for regulative intervention to protect the rights of cultural and creative professionals from these large platforms, as no specific person was mentioned to represent their interests at the European level in 2021, although organizations like the SPIO have been involved.

Minister Gremmels' discussions in Brussels focused on securing robust EU funding for research and culture, simplifying funding procedures, and protecting the rights of cultural and creative professionals in the digital age.
