Hessian Cities to Get EU-Funded Climate-Resilient Support for Business Parks

Hessian cities and communities are set to receive support in making their commercial areas climate-resilient. The European-funded 'IB-Green' project, involving ten partners from six countries, aims to develop strategies for industrial and business parks to adapt to climate change. The project, led by the FZK, has chosen the intermunicipal industrial estate 'Moenchhof' as a pilot area.

The 'IB-Green' project, part of the European funding initiative, focuses on reducing flooding risks and business damage due to heavy rain. It also seeks to create climate-compatible conditions for employees by improving blue-green infrastructure. Measures include roof and facade greening, retention systems, green break rooms, and sealed surface reduction. The Hessian Agency for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) has demonstrated the potential of these adaptations. By implementing these measures, industrial estates can strengthen their resilience to heat and heavy rain, benefiting both companies and employees. Currently, large sealed areas in industrial estates can burden sewage networks during heavy rain and create local heat islands on hot days.

The pilot municipalities, working with the FZK and other European partners, will develop a catalog of measures to support Hessian cities and communities in adapting their commercial areas to climate change. The 'IB-Green' project aims to create more sustainable, resilient, and employee-friendly industrial estates, starting with the 'Moenchhof' pilot area.
