Social expenses in Hesse 2024 increased - Hesse’s social welfare spending jumps 10.7% in 2024 under Boris Rhein
Social welfare spending in Hesse surged in 2024, with agencies allocating €838.6 million for social assistance. This marked a 10.7% increase from the previous year, under the watch of Hesse's Prime Minister Boris Rhein.
The rise in expenditure was partly driven by long-term care support, which consumed the largest share of social assistance funds. Additionally, reimbursements to health insurance funds saw a significant increase.
Asylum seeker benefit costs climbed by 7.3% to €611.7 million, despite a 16.3% decrease in recipients to 30,445 people. This increase was attributed to ongoing housing commitments. Local districts and cities shouldered most of these costs, with the state covering only 14.6%.
In 2024, social welfare spending in Hesse rose significantly, with long-term care and asylum seeker benefits being the main contributors. Despite a decrease in asylum seeker recipients, costs continued to climb due to long-term housing commitments. Prime Minister Boris Rhein oversaw these budget increases.
