869 People in Hesse Change Their Gender Entry in 2024 - Hesse’s 2024 Gender Law Change Empowers 869 Residents to Self-Identify
As of December 31, 2024, Hesse's population stood at approximately 6.28 million. Notably, 869 residents legally changed their gender registration in 2024, thanks to the Self-Determination Act (SBGG). The SBGG, implemented in 2024, allows individuals to alter their legal gender and first name through a simple declaration, making it more accessible for transgender, intersex, and non-binary people. Since August 1, 2024, individuals can initiate their gender change registration at local registry offices. However, a mandatory three-month waiting period precedes the formal declaration. The SBGG has facilitated gender self-determination in Hesse, with 869 people benefiting from the simplified process in 2024. The new law has made legal gender changes more accessible and efficient.
