Wind power in state forests brings in 10.7 million euros - Hessen-Forst’s wind power boom doubles revenue in four years
Hessen-Forst, the state forest administration of Hesse, Germany, has seen a significant boost in wind power revenue. In 2023, earnings reached €12.97 million, more than double the €5.99 million from 2019. This growth is driven by an increasing demand for wind energy and the state's commitment to renewable energy expansion.
Hesse has designated 418 priority zones for wind energy, covering 38,945 hectares, with about 35% of these zones located in state forests. This amounts to 13,710 hectares under Hessen-Forst's jurisdiction. The recent tender process for wind priority zones in state forests concluded in mid-February 2024, with preparations for additional tender procedures already underway.
As of now, three-quarters of these priority zones are already contractually allocated for wind turbines. In 2023 alone, Hessen-Forst earned approximately €10.7 million by leasing land in state-owned forests for wind turbine installations.
The increasing revenue from wind power indicates a thriving renewable energy sector in Hesse's state forests. With the majority of priority zones already allocated and more tender processes in the pipeline, Hessen-Forst continues to play a significant role in the region's transition to clean energy.
