More than 22,000 honorary cards issued in Hesse - Hesse Volunteer Card celebrates growth with 20 years of rewarding service
The Hesse Volunteer Card has grown in popularity since its launch over two decades ago. The programme rewards dedicated volunteers with discounts on cultural, sporting, and educational activities. To qualify, participants must contribute at least 250 hours of unpaid work each year.
The scheme began in 2006 and will mark its 20th anniversary in 2026. By 2019, the number of registered cards had reached 19,497. That figure rose further by June 2023, with 22,682 active cards recorded.
Holders of the card gain access to reduced prices at cinemas, museums, swimming pools, and major events. Discounts also apply to adult education courses and top-tier cultural performances. However, volunteers receiving a flat-rate expense allowance are not eligible for the benefits.
Plans are underway to introduce a digital e-card app, making the programme more accessible. While exact participation numbers since the scheme’s start remain unpublished, the steady increase in registrations highlights its expanding reach.
The Hesse Volunteer Card continues to incentivise community service by offering tangible rewards. With a digital version on the horizon, organisers aim to streamline access for even more participants. The programme’s growth reflects its role in supporting both volunteers and local cultural institutions.
