Hesse suspends tax enforcement for a peaceful 2025 Christmas season

Hesse’s tax authorities have announced a temporary pause in enforcement actions for the 2025 Christmas period. From 24 December 2025 to 6 January 2026, most official measures—including penalties, seizures, and audits—will be suspended under the Weihnachtsfriedenspause tradition. The move aims to ease pressure on citizens during the festive season, with only rare exceptions allowed.

The suspension covers a wide range of enforcement activities. Tax offices will not issue reminders for unpaid taxes, levies, or penalty notices during this time. Property seizures, wage garnishments, and account attachments will also halt, as will the delivery of enforcement orders.

The pause means citizens can expect fewer official demands during the holidays. Enforcement actions, penalties, and investigations will resume only after 6 January 2026. Authorities have stressed that exceptions will be minimal, ensuring most taxpayers face no disruptions during the festive period.
