Hesse police halt 52 drivers for snow-covered vehicles in winter crackdown

Police in Central Hesse have cracked down on drivers failing to clear snow and ice from their vehicles. The operation took place along Federal Highway B253 near Eschenburg-Roth over two days in January. Officers also uncovered other serious traffic violations during the checks. The Regional Traffic Service for Lahn-Dill carried out the inspections on Tuesday, January 6, and Thursday, January 8, 2025. Traffic enforcement officers, uniformed police, and a drone were used to monitor vehicles and gather evidence. Their focus was on preventing snow and ice from vehicle roofs from becoming hazards on the road.

A total of 312 vehicles were stopped during the operation. Of these, 52—37 passenger cars and 15 trucks—had snow or ice on their roofs. Drivers were given ladders and brooms to clear the build-up before being allowed to continue. One tractor-trailer driver was found breaking multiple rules. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, was speeding, and had violated driving and rest-time regulations. Additionally, the driver lacked a valid licence. As a result, the driver was banned from continuing the journey, and both the driver and the transport company now face fines. The Central Hesse Police Headquarters, based at Ferniestraße 8 in Gießen, oversees such operations. The two-day operation targeted unsafe driving conditions caused by snow and ice. Officers also identified other violations, including speeding and licence issues. The checks aim to improve road safety during winter conditions.
