Interior Minister Poseck remembers murdered police officer - Hesse Honors Fallen Officer Ten Years After Fatal Christmas Eve Attack

Hesse’s Interior Minister Roman Poseck has paid tribute to emergency responders for their service over the holidays. He also remembered a police officer killed in a brutal attack ten years ago. The incident, which took place on Christmas Eve 2015, remains a painful reminder of the risks faced by those in uniform.

On 24 December 2015, a 27-year-old man attacked two police officers with a knife on a regional train at Herborn station. The officers had been called by a train conductor after the man resisted a ticket inspection. The assailant, later identified as 20-year-old Syrian refugee Abdalla K., fatally stabbed 46-year-old officer Christoph Rehm and severely injured his 47-year-old colleague.

The attacker was shot by police during the confrontation. A decade later, Poseck described the crime as deeply saddening and shocking. He honoured Rehm’s sacrifice, calling it the ultimate price paid for upholding the rule of law.

In his recent statement, Poseck also thanked all emergency responders—police, firefighters, and paramedics—for their dedication over the festive period. He singled out volunteer firefighters for their unwavering commitment during the holidays.

The 2015 attack in Herborn continues to resonate as a tragic loss for law enforcement. Poseck’s remarks underscore the ongoing risks faced by officers and the enduring impact of such violence. His gratitude to emergency workers reflects their vital role in keeping communities safe.
