Heart for fellow humans - Hesse donates more - Hesse Defies Germany’s 14% Drop in Charitable Donations for 2025

Charitable giving in Germany has fallen overall in the first nine months of 2025. Nationwide donations dropped by 14% compared to the same period last year. However, Hesse stands out as the only region where both the number of donors and total contributions have risen.

Across Germany, total donations from January to September 2025 reached €2.8 billion. This marks a significant decline from 2024, when €3.26 billion was given in the same timeframe. Most regions followed this downward trend, with Baden-Württemberg seeing a sharp 32% decrease.

While most of Germany saw fewer donations in early 2025, Hesse bucked the trend. The region's higher participation and larger average gifts resulted in a net increase in charitable funds. Nationally, however, the overall decline suggests a broader shift in giving patterns.
