Cities Seek Ways to More Appropriate Housing Distribution - Hesse Cities Pioneer Fair Housing Initiatives
Several cities in Hesse are taking innovative steps to ensure fairer housing allocation. Frankfurt is incentivising tenants to downsize, while Marburg is transforming a farmstead into senior-friendly apartments. Meanwhile, Frankfurt and Offenbach are exploring more equitable housing distribution methods.
Frankfurt is tackling the 'lock-in effect' by offering relocation bonuses to social housing tenants who voluntarily downsize. The city provides ā¬750 to ā¬2,500, along with subsidies for moving and renovation costs. However, uptake has been low, with only two households utilising the offer in 2022. Offenbach attempted apartment swaps within its portfolio but saw minimal response.
Marburg, on the other hand, is converting an existing farmstead into small, accessible apartments for older residents. The project aims to create suitable, barrier-free housing to enable seniors to 'age in place'. Frankfurt and Offenbach are also exploring fairer housing distribution, considering residents' living conditions and social needs, although specific measures for these cities are not yet clear.
Hesse's cities are piloting novel approaches to fair housing. Frankfurt's relocation bonuses and Marburg's senior-friendly conversions show promise, but challenges remain. Further exploration is needed to ensure these initiatives effectively address housing inequalities.
