Heroic rescue attempt leaves man burned in New Year’s Day house fire

A fire broke out in a multi-family home in Bad Endbach early on New Year’s Day. The blaze started at around 6:20 a.m. on January 1, 2026, in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district. Emergency services rushed to the scene, though the cause remains unknown at this time.

Residents managed to evacuate the building on their own. Despite this, a 26-year-old man re-entered the house, believing others were still inside. He suffered severe burns to his hands as a result.

Two other individuals experienced mild smoke inhalation. All three injured people received treatment at the scene, but none required hospital admission. The fire caused extensive damage, completely destroying the attic. Officials estimate the total property loss at around €350,000. The building has been deemed temporarily uninhabitable while repairs are assessed. Police from Gießen (POL-GI) are leading the investigation into the incident.

The fire left the property severely damaged and displaced residents for the time being. Authorities continue to examine the cause of the blaze. No further injuries have been reported beyond the three treated on-site.
