Herford Authorities Seize Contraband in Crackdown on Illegal Activities

Authorities in Herford have recently revealed a joint operation that uncovered a range of illegal activities, including the sale of prohibited tobacco products and untaxed vapes, as well as potential breaches of employment and social insurance laws.

The operation, involving Bielefeld Customs, Herford District Police, and other collaborating authorities, targeted kiosks and shisha bars in the city. They seized a substantial amount of contraband, including over 48 liters of e-liquid, 28 kilograms of untaxed waterpipe tobacco, and over 10.5 kilograms of snus and nicotine pouches. These items are prohibited or heavily regulated in Germany.

The operation also led to the discovery of erectile dysfunction medication, which is a prescription-only drug under German law. In total, 38 gel sachets and 35 tablets were confiscated. Additionally, the operation raised suspicions of undeclared work, failure to register for social insurance, and violations of the Minimum Wage Act and benefit claim reporting obligations.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the operators of the affected kiosks and shisha bars. They face charges of tax evasion, violations of the Tobacco Products Act, and breaches of the Medicines Act. The operation highlights the commitment of local authorities to combat illegal employment practices and the sale of prohibited or untaxed products in Herford.
