Helsa Cemetery Hit by Grave Robbers, Leaving Families Devastated

A cemetery in Helsa has been targeted by thieves, leaving families and police searching for answers. Between Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning, unknown offenders stole decorative items from around 20 graves. The attack also caused significant damage to the chapel and several headstones.

The incident took place at Helsa's New Cemetery sometime between 2 p.m. on Tuesday and 11 a.m. on Thursday. Offenders removed bowls and vases from graves, suggesting they used a vehicle to carry away the stolen goods. In addition to the thefts, the cemetery chapel was broken into, though nothing was taken from inside.

Some headstones were also damaged during the crime. Police are treating the case as aggravated theft, disturbance of the peace of the dead, and property damage. Authorities have noted that no similar grave-related crimes have been reported in the Kassel region, including the surrounding districts of Schwalm-Eder and Waldeck-Frankenberg, over the past two years.

Kassel Police are now urging anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses who may have seen suspicious individuals or vehicles near the cemetery during the given timeframe are asked to contact officers. The investigation remains ongoing, with no arrests made so far.

The stolen items and the extent of the damage have left the community shaken. Police continue to gather evidence and have provided a direct contact number, +49 561 9100, for anyone who may assist the case. Families affected by the theft are being supported as the investigation proceeds.
