Helmstedt keeps dog tax rates unchanged for 2026 despite revenue dip
Helmstedt’s dogs tax rates will stay the same in 2026, with no planned increases for owners. The city confirmed that fees for non-dangerous dogs will remain at €84 for the first pet and €96 for each additional one. Dangerous breeds will continue to be taxed at €450 per year.
The decision follows a review of the city’s dog tax revenue in 2025. Helmstedt collected around €162,600 last year, a slight drop from €165,816 in 2024. Despite this decrease, officials have chosen not to raise fees or issue new assessment notices.
The number of registered dogs in the city has also stayed nearly the same. In 2025, there were approximately 1,900 dogs on record, compared to 1,952 the previous year. Authorities have not indicated any plans to change the current tax structure for 2026.
Owners of non-dangerous dogs will keep paying €84 for their first pet and €96 for any others. The higher rate of €450 for dangerous breeds also remains unchanged. The city expects no further adjustments to dog tax policies in the coming year.
