It is the beautiful view of the city. At the top there is the sky. There are so many houses and buildings one beside the other. At the bottom there are plants and sand.

Hanau's City Center Initiatives to Continue Despite Federal Funding Expiration

The Hanau Marketing Association (HMV) has vowed to maintain city center initiatives despite the looming expiration of federal funding. The 'Future-Proof City Centers and Towns' program, which provided around five million euros to Hanau, is set to end on November 30. The HMV, representing over 160 businesses, has expressed concern about the federal government's decision to discontinue financial support.

The HMV plans to keep key initiatives running, such as hiring a city center manager, upgrading public spaces, and continuing shopping district activities. These efforts aim to build on the progress made with the federal funding. The money was used to reduce vacancy rates, increase street events, boost foot traffic, and redevelop the former Kaufhof department store. The HMV's Hanau Recharged urban development program, supported by the funding, attracted pop-up stores and new business concepts.

Three companies—Forum Hanau, Sparkasse Hanau, and Müller-Ditschler fashion house—have pledged to increase their contributions in 2026 to sustain city center activities. The HMV, which plays a crucial role in organizing and promoting city center events, will continue to support the cashback parking scheme. Events like Hanau Clears Its Warehouses, Fairy Tale Action Day, Black Weekend sales, and the Grimmscheck city voucher will remain on the calendar. Each empty storefront in Hanau results in an average tax revenue loss of over €12,000 for the municipality, according to a study by the Cologne Institute for Retail Research (IFH).

The HMV is committed to maintaining city center initiatives despite the expiration of federal funding. With the support of local businesses and continued efforts to attract visitors and new businesses, Hanau's city center is expected to remain vibrant and resilient.
