Hanau’s Bold Digital Overhaul Sets 2030 Goal for Full Administration Modernization

Hanau’s city council has approved a major overhaul of its IT systems to fully digitise the administration by 2030. A new division, called Information Technology, will launch on February 1, 2026, led by a newly created Chief Digital Officer (CDO). The move aims to streamline services and position the city as a leader in digital innovation within the Rhine-Main region.

The restructuring will bring all IT functions under one roof, dividing them into four core areas. These include IT governance and contracts, Smart City and digital transformation, data management, and digitalisation and organisational development. The goal is to create clearer processes and faster decision-making.

The changes take effect from February 1, 2026, with the new IT division set to drive Hanau’s digital future. The city plans to deliver practical benefits for residents while establishing itself as a hub for data centres and digital innovation. The success of the initiative will depend on collaboration between the administration, businesses, and the wider community.
