Hanau's 2026 local elections take shape as nominations close for key races
Nominations for Hanau's 2026 local elections closed on January 5, 2025, meeting the 6:00 p.m. deadline. Candidates and parties have now been confirmed for the City Council, district advisory boards, the Foreigners' Advisory Council, and the Lord Mayor race. The final list of approved nominees will be decided later this month. A total of 11 political parties and voter groups submitted nominations for the Hanau City Council election. These include the CDU, AfD, SPD, Greens, FDP, BfH, Die Linke, BSW, FW, VOLT, and the Justice Party. The deadline for all submissions was strictly enforced, with no late entries accepted.
For the district assemblies, 12 independent voter groups or local lists have applied so far. These are spread across Hanau-Mitte (3 lists), Hanau-Nord, Hanau-Süd, Wilhelmsbad, and Kesselstadt. Their participation will be reviewed before the final decision. Six candidates are running for Lord Mayor: Dr. Maximilian Bieri (SPD), Isabelle Hemsley (CDU), Sascha Feldes (Greens), Henrik Statz (FDP), Jochen Dohn (The Left), and Khurrem Akhtar (Justice Party). Until the official admission decision, any nomination can still be withdrawn in full or in part. The Hanau Municipal Electoral Committee will meet on January 16, 2025, to review all submissions. They will determine which candidates and lists meet the legal requirements for the March 15, 2026, elections.
The next step is the committee's approval of all nominations on January 16. Once confirmed, the final list of candidates and parties will be published. Voting for the City Council, district boards, Foreigners' Advisory Council, and Lord Mayor will take place in March 2026.
