Hanau shuts all cemeteries due to icy hazards on January 12

Hanau's twelve cemeteries will remain closed to visitors on January 12 due to hazardous icy conditions. The city has taken this step to prevent accidents on slippery paths. Funerals, however, will continue as planned despite the temporary closure. The decision follows concerns over safety during winter weather. Visitors are often warned to take extra care when walking through cemetery grounds in cold months. If conditions ease, the sites will reopen on January 13 at their usual times.

The city manages around 38 hectares of burial grounds across its twelve cemeteries. Two of these are Jewish, though one no longer holds burials. Some former cemeteries in Hanau have since been converted into public parks. Authorities have not specified how many of the twelve sites are currently active for new burials.

The closure aims to protect people from potential falls or injuries. Funerals will proceed without disruption, ensuring families can still hold services. Residents are advised to check for updates on reopening before visiting.
